DISTANCE LEARNING REPORT

We have made great strides with our distance learning initiative over the past five months. Over thirty online faculty members have attended training in Blackboard course creation, design, and advanced techniques, in addition to learning some new online teaching strategies.
Approximately 90% of our online course offerings for this fall meet the new course content and design guidelines approved last spring. This means our course Blackboards across curriculums have more visual continuity and will be easier to navigate in addition to being more visually interesting and dynamic.
I submitted the request to Apple Computer to designate CCC as an iTunes U College and we have been approved. Representatives from Apple will be conducting a 2 _ hour workshop on Monday September 11, from 2:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m. They will explain how Apple and iTunes can help us further our goal of educating students through Podcasting and more innovative uses of multimedia in our course Blackboards.

Distance Learning has come a long way these past few months. I am now ready to move our online initiative to the next level. I envision our online faculty across curriculums incorporating audio and video lectures and demonstrations in their courses in addition to interfacing with iTunes U in storing and disseminating/publishing our multimedia instructional files to our students.
This is a very exciting time for educators because the technology is available to help us get closer to replicating the traditional classroom experience in the online environment. There is no doubt of the demand for our distance learning courses as this fall semester has proven and hopefully we can meet that demand with more “cutting edge” online courses.
I also hope to offer a complete online degree in college transfer by Fall of 2007 and plan to continue training our faculty in the latest distance learning instructional technology.
We did encounter a few glitches on our online course creation procedures (some faculty members both adjunct and full time failed to request their courses be copied over to Fall 06). Hopefully with the help and support of the curriculum coordinators and directors we can alleviate the few problems we had for Spring 2007. I’ll be addressing these issues at the division meeting.
