While conducting portfolio critique sessions during the European Month of Photography in Bratislava this past weekend it struck me that I also learn and grow as an artist / image-maker when participating in photographic reviews such as this.
So many of the European photographers I reviewed are searching for a unique personal style and direction in their photography and hopefully we as reviewers were able to help them identify their vision as image makers and possibly see their work in a new context.
I believe a great deal of photography is autobiographical and even when photographers are shooting portraits, landscapes or more abstract and/or making formalistic pictures the images still contain a little bit of the photographers heart and soul. This is certainly the case with my work.
I find it exciting and challenging to do a viable and thoughtful critique in 20 minutes. That is the amount of time…
