Carteret Community College Photography Program Graduate

At 25, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. My Mother had recently passed and I was in need of a move; a serious change of direction.  I decided to relocate to Morehead City, North Carolina. I arrived at Carteret Community College in search of a new path.

My adviser Cathy Crowell, suggested I try Photographic Technology. I didn’t hesitate and said, “Let’s do it!”  Little did I know, this decision would change my life forever.  How I see the world around me and how I express myself.

More importantly, both Cathy Crowell and Patrick Keough would soon become my mentors, my heroes. Years later, I would meet my beautiful wife who went through the program as well. She had the same story and it was through photography we were able to connect. Shortly after, we had 3 children and currently one on the way.

I proudly graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Photography. My specialties were Fine Art Nudes, Landscapes, Action (skateboarding, wake boarding) and Event Photography. My style is very candid and spontaneous. I look for new and creative ways to capture and visually translate my subjects no matter who, where or what they are.

I focus on lighting, really thinking and problem solving every component. I only shoot with my trusty Nikon, and always on manual settings.  I like to shoot things that make me happy, such as family, children, travel and always the water.

I’ve been fortunate to travel and photograph my journeys as they unfold before me. It’s the way I remember and savor those special and unique moments in life.

It allows me to reminisce. Having the ability to recall all of life’s special wonders such as, birth of children, that special day on the boat, Costa Rica, New Orleans or where ever my travels take me.

Photography fires my passion. It keeps me focused. I’m fortunate to have discovered the Photography Program at CCC and come out with a whole new perspective/view on life.

What impresses me about Joe is his passion for life, his love and dedication to family, friends and his photography. He is not afraid to take risks with his image making and is always striving to better himself personally and professionally. If you have need of a photographer for a wedding, special event, portrait session or action photography you will not be disappointed in hiring Joe Whichard. It was a pleasure to be his photography instructor!
